Siddhidhatri Devi: The Divine Bestower of Accomplishments
Siddhidhatri Devi is revered as the ninth form of Goddess Durga, celebrated during the auspicious festival of Navaratri. Her name, ‘Siddhidhatri’, translates to ‘the bestower of accomplishments’.
She is the embodiment of power and blessings, symbolizing the culmination of all the divine energies.
The Story of Siddhidhatri Devi
This story depicts a time before creation, when the universe was just a void. Goddess Kushmanda, with her radiant smile, brought forth the cosmos. She then created the Trimurti – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Lord Shiva, seeking perfection, approached Kushmanda.
In response, Kushmanda manifested another goddess, Siddhidhatri Devi. She bestowed upon Shiva the 8 Siddhis, which encompass mystical perfections and spiritual attainments.
Siddhidhatri Mata is represented with four arms, holding a chakra (discus), shankh (conch shell), mace, and lotus. She is depicted seated on a fully bloomed lotus or a lion, her mount. In certain pictorial representations, she is accompanied by Gandharvas, Yakshas, Siddhas, Asuras, and Devas, all shown paying homage to the goddess.
Significance of Maa Siddhidhatri
Mata Siddhidhatri possesses eight supernatural powers, or the Siddhis, called Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakambya, Ishitva, and Vashitva.
Anima means reducing one’s body to the size of an atom; Mahima means expanding one’s body to an infinitely large size; Garima means becoming infinitely heavy; Laghima means becoming weightless; Prapti means having omnipresence; Prakambya means achieving whatever one desires; Ishitva means possessing absolute lordship; and Vashitva means having the power to subjugate all.
Lord Shiva was blessed by Siddhidhatri Devi by being given all the eight powers. The Supreme Goddess emerged and brought forth the Trinity of Deities (Trimurti), Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. She advised the three Lords to contemplate to attain spiritual knowledge and power.
